Mar 11, 2010 13:24:52

Agriculture Ministry participates at the ANTAD Expo 2010, with a pavilion where 140 companies will showcase their products.

Generalizing the use of regulations and quality standards is one of the priorities to raise the incomes of producers and improvetheir business opportunities.

To improve the supply chain of food products fromfarms to the food table, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fishing and Food is working on several fronts, ranging from ensuring quality standards to building a public infrastructure to help in the care andtimely distribution of food and to raise the income of producers.

SAGARPA promotes contractual schemes of sales-purchasingthat reassures buyers and sellers, the use of pricing information by quality andrisk management, access to credit and infrastructure – like the refrigeration network - and buying directly from producers to avoid middlemen.

The representative from SAGARPA added that the organization is looking for a way to include producers in a modern system of marketing and distribution, which involves handling the logistics for the conservation, transportation and timely delivery of quality products.

He remarked that when these factors are adequately addressed it is possible to simultaneously achieve better prices for primary producers and lower prices for consumers. "The key is to reduce middlemen", he said.

He emphasized that on the commercial side, that in order to actively participate, knowing the trends of domestic and international markets should be made a priority, that is, "knowing what products are consumers willing to pay for and at what price."

ANTAD Expo will hold business meetings in the next three days at the premises of Expo Guadalajara, which can be made the most of by food producers.
